The coastal area of Teluk Lingga in North Sangatta, East Kutai, East Kalimantan, has begun to experience environmental degradation.
As a form of environmental concern, PT Arkara Pratama Energi (APE) has initiated the planting of mangrove seedlings in the Teluk Lingga coastal area.
“We chose to plant mangroves because the coastal areas have started showing signs of environmental degradation. We consulted with the East Kutai Environmental Agency (DLH), and they recommended planting in the Teluk Lingga area,” said Akhmad Wasrip Setiyono, Head of Mining Engineering at PT APE, when met in Sangatta, East Kutai, on Tuesday (April 22, 2025).
A total of 4,000 mangrove seedlings of the Rhizophora mucronata species were planted to coincide with Earth Day, which is commemorated annually on April 22. The seedlings were planted across a 19-hectare area, with the planting process expected to be completed by May.
Planting mangroves over a wide area allows for optimal adaptation to coastal environmental conditions such as salinity, soil aeration, and tidal fluctuations. A planting density that is not too high helps reduce competition among individuals and increases survival rates.
Additionally, sufficient space supports natural regeneration and the sustainable recovery of the ecosystem.
